Sports Superstitions and Luck

By Honey B Wackx.

Players and sportsmen have always considered luck as an important factor in their sport achievements. Not only the players, the coaches and fans also are firm believers of superstitions. Some of these superstitions are ridiculous and some of them are strange.

Here are a few Sports superstitions:

Sporting a blue North Carolina shorts under his bull uniform was thought to be a lucky charm by the famous player Michael Jordan. The most superstitious among all players are baseball players. Before picking up the baseball bat, spitting on the hand is regarded to be lucky by the baseball players. Sticking a wad of gum deliberately on the player’s hat is another good luck charm for him. A dog walking across the diamond before the first pitch is a sign of bad luck.

It is believed by some players that stepping on the bases before running off the field at the end of an innings is a sign of good luck. It is considered a very bad omen to lend a bat to a fellow player. Never praise a pitcher for his perfect game while the game is still going on.

In the game of basketball, wiping the soles of your sports shoes is thought to be lucky. Bouncing the ball is necessary before taking a foul shot. This denotes good luck. During the warm up session, the last person to shoot a basket will have a good match. In the game of bowling, the same clothes should be worn to have a continual winning streak. Having the number 300 on the license plate also makes one win the game as it is a perfect square in this game.

Carrying good luck charms in the bowling bag or wearing it around the neck also invites good luck. Now moving towards the game of fishing, throwing back the first bait after catching it is a sure sign of good luck. Before casting the rod for catching the fish, spitting on the bait is considered lucky. Do not change rods while fishing as it is an indication of bad luck. While still fishing, never tell anyone the number of fish caught by you. This will spoil the fun.

The game of football also has some superstitions followed by the players. The football players generally sport double numbers on their jersey. This brings good luck. Having a mascot in the game of football is regarded to be lucky as well as an important good luck symbol. Starting only with an odd numbered count is a sign of being lucky in the game of golf. The balls should not be in a number higher than four as it is a bad sign.

Carrying coins in the pocket by a golf player is a lucky sign. The hockey sticks should never be crossed. They bring ill omen to the game of ice hockey. The word ‘shutout’ should be avoided in the locker room before the game of ice hockey begins. In the game of tennis, holding of two balls at a time for serving is not a good sign. Wearing the color yellow as well as stepping on the court lines should be avoided in this game.

Thus, these are certain superstitions and their impact on the above games and the players concerned. If you know of any other sports superstitions of want to elaborate on any of those mentioned here please reply with a comment or submit an article on the submit form.

Sandy asks…

Do you think that “Luck” is a big factor in football…?

I think it is… I firmly believe that England had a good enough team to win the 1990 WC and the 96 Euros… we just didn’t have what the French had in ’98… or the Germans in ’90 and ’96… a bit of luck.

Indeed, many of football’s historic achievements had a bit of luck involved… such as United’s Treble… how many times were they THAT close to losing it? They finished above Arsenal in the PL by a SINGLE point… and in the FA Cup Semi… Bergkamp (Uncharacteristically) missed a last-minute penalty which would’ve put us through… and they were getting BATTERED by Bayern in the CL Final… extremely jammy cvnts to win it…

I’ll even say the same for The Invincibles… we were brought down to our knees at times during that run…

Liverpool in 2005? Outclassed in every way in the First Half by AC Milan… 3-0 down… and took one hell of an inspired performance to bring them back from the dead?

Btw, I’m not discrediting these achievements in ANY way… I’m just saying maybe luck had played a big part in these…

Liverpool in 2005 also reinforces my belief that in the CL (Or any knockout competition)… that the best team doesn’t necessarily win it… ANY team can knock out the best of them on their day… ONE mistake… and you’re out. Barca – Arsenal at Camp Nou… we were getting destroyed… Barca players had a lapse of concentration in the dying minutes and they got dispossessed, Wilshere threaded a pass which, if Bendtner buried, we’d be in the QFs of the CL by now on Away goals… at least in the PL the best and the most consistent team wins it…

FQ: What matters more to you? The PL or the CL? The PL has always mattered to me a lot more than the CL… many people in England also share this sentiment. The CL is a gloryfied FIFA moneyspinning c0cksucker… the old European Cup format had more integrity… it was actually Champions playing other Champions… and I don’t care about winning the CL off of Juve or whatever… it means EVERYTHING to me to snatch the PL from right under Man United’s nose… the PL is the main priority. CL is the bonus.

Chris asks…

Does anyone think Kim Clijsters is pretty lucky and the 2010 Us OPen is hers for the taking due to luck…?

I mean, not taking anything away from her skills… she’s a former world number 1 and 2 time grand slam champion… but ever since her comeback I feel like she’s been getting a little too much luck.

I mean… Against Serena Williams at the US Open she won because of Serena’s foot fault (set up match point) and then the penalty point for Serena’s outburst. I’m not saying she didn’t outplay Serena (she did in the first set most definitely… but the 2nd set was quite tight)…. and at the 2003 Australian Open she was up 5-1 against Serena in the 3rd set but Serena came back and beat her. And Serena came back from 5-0 from matchpoint against Henin in the 2008 Miami (?) and won. And in this case, Serena was only a game behind and it wasn’t even matchpoint. It was probably a 50/50 chance Kim would have broken down and Serena won against her.

Plus… Kim’s always played badly in finals due to her nerves and pressure… but luckily for her…. Dementieva and Sharapova and the other women were playing badly and Melanie Oudin took out some seeds… so she got to play a newbie Caroline Wozniacki in the final. She probably would have collapsed had she played a higher level player… (She pretty much couldn’t handle Henin in their three grand slam finals and had breakdowns).

Also… at the 2010 Miami event…. when she set up matchpoint against Henin in the 3rd set tiebreak, she later admitted it was pure luck she managed to volley Henin’s backhand passing shot over the net. Otherwise it would have been Henin’s matchpoint and knowing her nerves Henin would have beaten her.

And then…. at the 2010 Wimbledon… Henin was completely overwhelming her in the 1st set… but unluckily Henin tripped and injured her elbow which caused Clijsters to easily defeat her once the match went on.

And finally… just this week… Sharapova had to deal with tiredness from playing a 3 setter in her semis match but Clijsters was well rested because Ivanovic got a foot injury….. and then Today…. Maria was destroying her on court but the rain delay allowed Clijsters to collect herself and come back and win. ANd also… the rain delay caused Maria to lose focus and intensity and as the match went into a 3 setter you could see how tired she was.

If her luck continues…… I see her getting a super easy draw at teh US OPen (since she will be seeded 4th right?) and her ranked quarterfinal and semifinal opponent being non seeds since the seeded players played badly and got ousted… I then see her playing against some good, but inexperienecd player in the final like Azarenka and winning…

Seriously I mean.. the 2010 US Open has basically overtaken the French Open as THE MAJOR THATS EASIEST FOR INEXPERIENCED PLAYERS TO WIN. I mean wtf? The Us Open has always had the widest array of champions from venus to serena to henin to clijsters to sharapova… but now…. Serena and venus AND Maria are injured. AND Henin is injured and has already dropped out of the event.

There is basically NO-ONE to pose a threat to Clijsters at teh Us Open. THe only person who can win against her is some low ranked player who is red hot and luckier than she (like Schiavone at teh French, Rezai at Madrid, Sanchez at Rome, Petrova at Australian).

Honestly… I see Clijsters winning this tournament without dropping a set.
Oh yeah.. Jelena isn’t really much a threat because Kim leads 6-1 against her and Jelena never could handle the Belgian duo (lost 10 times to Henin) nor collect herself enough (only made 1 Grand Slam final)

Radwanska lacks offensive power to win on such a fast playing surface…

Stosur….. the girl is good on clay lets just leave it on that. Stosur sucks on grass and is average/below average on hard courts.

Zvonareva is kinda the type of lucky red hot player i was talking about…

and Dementieva has been streaky since her injury.

Perhaps Li Na MIGHT stand a chance? but she’s not at Clijster’s level either…
