Clock Superstitions and Customs over the Ages

Clock Superstitions are the customs and beliefs about clocks that have been passed from generation to generation since centuries. Nearly all cultures of the world have their own set of superstitions. Some are there to bring good luck and some are there as ill omens or for bad luck. So many superstitions have also affected the various spheres of our lives and have become a part of it.

Superstitions can be related to anything in and around us. There are many objects that have superstitions with them. One such object of daily use is the clock, the time showing device. There are many interesting as well as strange superstitions relating to the clock.

Giving the clock as a wedding gift is considered very unlucky. They say if there is a clock in the house which has been there for many years; it will suddenly stop working with the death of the owner who has owned the clock for so many years.

There is a clock superstition that if a clock which is not working for many years suddenly starts working or chiming indicates a death in the family. There is yet another superstition that all the clocks of the house should be stopped at once with the death of a family member. If not done so, it will bring bad luck to the whole family.

The ticking of a brass clock quite loudly is a sign of a stormy and windy weather. There is also a superstition of giving easy mercy death to an ailing or sick person. Locking all the doors and windows of the room, stopping the clock in that room and taking away the pillow of the sick person are the three simple steps to relieve the ailing person of a painful death.

The clock has always been related to the time. So there is yet another superstition which says that if one is in a happy and pleasant mood till ten ‘o clock in the morning, they will have everything fine the rest of the day.

Looking at the clock every now and then should be avoided as it will make the day boring and unpleasant. Frequent watchers of the clock do not have a good time. A general interpretation of seeing clocks in the dreams indicates a journey is in the air very soon.

In the city of Wales, it is believed that if the town hall clock and the church bells ring simultaneously at the same time shows the sign of a fire in the neighboring areas or the vicinity. The British take it as an ill omen if the clock strikes during the rituals of a wedding ceremony.

It is said that an old clock should never be adjusted backwards as it might bring the spirit of the owner to the house again. A clock which has stopped working should be discarded as soon as possible from the house. They say it brings bad luck to the family. The Chinese consider it as an ill omen to give someone the clock as a gift.

There is one more interesting superstition about clocks. It says that the clock will fall off or react in a weird way to a non religious woman soon after her delivering a child. This is also a bad omen both for the mother and the newly born child.
