Being a land of many beliefs, customs and traditions, China is popular for its various superstitions. The Chinese are a very superstitious people and it has become a part of their day-to-day life. In order to appreciate the social life of china, we need to understand the popular beliefs, customs and superstitions of this land.
Some of the common and popular Chinese superstitions are:
- Hitting a person with a broom will bring bad luck to the hitter himself and thus ruining his own life.
- According to the Chinese, one should be clean shaved or if sporting a moustache, it should be well trimmed. Breaking this norm brings bad luck.
- The Chinese superstition also believes that if a dog howls at late night, someone has died somewhere.
- Building a house facing the north rings bad luck and ruin according to another Chinese belief.
- Crying of a baby for no specific reason indicates the presence of ghosts around the house and that the baby is disturbed and scared by them.
- Another Chinese belief says that dreaming of teeth or snow indicated the death of that person’s parents.
- It is a superstition among the Chinese that clipping of toe nails or finger nails at night invites ghosts to the house.
- If one’s life partner is either three or six years older or younger to them, then it is a sign of bad luck for that person.
- According to another Chinese superstition, pointing at the moon with one’s finger tips is not considered good as it might make the one’s ear tips fall off.
- Keeping a turtle as a pet and caging it will ruin the business and fortune of the person doing so. It also slows down the business of the person.
- The number 4 according to the Chinese superstition is considered unlucky. Hence it is not used in the choosing numbers of houses and vehicles. This is mainly because the number has the same pronunciation as that of the word ‘death’ in the Chinese language.
- And in a similar way the number 8 is considered to be very lucky according to the Chinese tradition and customs because if pronounced, the word eight sounds similar to the sound of prosperity in Chinese language. Hence the social life of china gives much importance to the number 8.
- Sweeping on the New Year is considered inauspicious by the Chinese as it is said to sweep away all the good fortune of the house. Therefore, sweeping and cleaning of the house is done just a day before the New Year.
- Another popular superstition says that eating uncut noodles in the soup will increase life. It is said that cutting the noodles cuts longevity.
- The numbers 8, 18, 13 and 168 are considered lucky by the Chinese people. These numbers are in great demand in china according to the superstitions.
- Another superstition also points out that using knives and scissors on the new year‘s day will cut off fortune. So it should be avoided on that day.
- Praising a newborn baby invites ghosts and evil spirits.
These superstitions have become an essential part of the Chinese culture. They help them to preserve their culture and to keep continuity with the past.
