If you’ve been using email for a while you almost surely have had scammers try to entice you with phoney offers of you winning lots of money in some sweepstakes, lottery and who knows what else. Well here are some samples of what many of you may have seen or received in your own email. These are taken from questions submitted from Yahoo Answers. Generally questions and answers seem to be from ordinary people , not experts, although some answers appear to have been thoroughly thought out or even researched. But those seem to be exceptions. Take a look below at what we’ve found.

Suzi Q answers:

1. Yen is spelt incorrectly in the “Therefore…” section. Yahoo must have bad spelling.
2. Yen in general: Why Yen? Why not USD with out the YEN business or M&M’s?
3. Paying a cash amount for a random winner? I thought they were ‘giving YOU money’ and not visa versa.
4. Strange that it’s paid via MasterCard and yet doesn’t ask for those details along with the rest of your life.
5. Winning money online is a bit strange, and for such an amount too.
6. “Give us $1500 real money for $1,000,000 possible real money, when we don’t give you our information but you give us yours”. Read that aloud and tell me that’s normal.
7. $1,000,000 USD for opening an email account? A bit pathetic if they have amounts of money to be spent on such things.
8. Http://www.consumerfraudreporting.org/promoscam_Yahoo.php explains why you are asking this question.
9. “You have six local singles wanting you”. Does that sounds legit as well? Possibly…..but how would the net know?
10. What are you going to do? Lose money or neither lose or gain money?

Lizzie asks…

How to get scammers to stop calling?

Okay first, let me say that these are not telemarketers or bill collectors- they are truly scammers. The ones that attempt to extort money from people by calling and saying that a warrant is being issued for your arrest because of some (nonexistant) loan you did not pay and that you are prime suspect in a felony investigation unless you send them money today. they have left numerous threatening messages (they seem to love saying stuff like “if you ignore my call then I can only wish you good luck as this situation unfolds on you”.)
These are folks outside the US who do not seem concerned about the “do not call” registry, or anyone telling them not to call anymore, or that you are on to them being a scam. they have called a total of 12 times JUST TODAY!
Anyone have any ideas?

Luvli Mystii answers:

Call the police and your phone company.

Then buy a airhorn. Blow it into the phone each and every time they call.

There are so many different versions of the above fake winnings of lotteries and sweepstakes. If you ever wonder how the perpetrator gets away with sending such emails think no more. One big way they do it is by commandeering someone’s website and adding sneaky code to it to cause such emails to be sent. The unsuspecting website owner doesn’t even know it until too late when their hosting company shuts them down or Google adds a notice in their search engines about a bad website, etc. I know because it happened to me before, more than once. It was difficult to find the problem and very difficult to get the site back up and running properly. Fortunately in my case I was able to resolve the problems. But in some cases it requires starting all over, almost from scratch.

Whatever you do – don’t fall for such scams.
