admin answers:

There are a lot of baby superstitions, I think they all sound dumb. Here is a list of a few though.

General:

**Happily married couples produce attractive children.
**Babies born on Sunday cannot be harmed by evil spirits.
**Babies born at night will stay awake at night.
**A baby that is born feet first will have healing abilities.
**A baby born from a red water sac is believed to have great powers and double sight.
**A baby born with big ears will be generous.
**A baby born with open hands and out-stretched fingers will be prosperous.
**A baby born with a large mouth will be a good singer.
**A baby born with teeth could be a vampire.

Baby Gender:
The Americans believed that you could tell a baby’s sex through a few tests:

If a mother’s feet are colder when she’s pregnant, it’s a boy; if her feet are warmer, it’s a girl.
If a mother’s urine is bright yellow, it’s a boy.
If a coin is dropped between a mother’s breasts and it falls to the left side, it’s a girl; if it falls to the right side, it’s a girl.
If a mother drops a knife, it’s a boy; if she drops scissors, it’s a girl.

Health & Beauty:

A mother should avoid taking baths to prevent germs from swimming up her vagina and affecting the baby.
Horse chestnuts or potatoes carried in a mother’s trouser pockets are good for piles.
Fitter women have easier and quicker labours.
If your mother had an easy pregnancy, you will too.
If your mother never lost weight after pregnancy, you won’t either.
If your mother got stretch marks, you will too.
If your mother had big babies, you will too.

There are a whole bunch more on this website. Http://pregnanstrology.com/index.html
and it tells superstitions that other countries believe.
Hope it helps.

Mary asks…

Does anyone know of any wives tales or superstitions to have a calm baby, lol?

Im newly pregnant and Im wondering if there is anything I can go to help ensure I will have a calm baby, instead of the kind of kids that run around screaming, lol. I was thinking that maybe if I try not to get frustrated, and stay calm maybe my baby will come out calm. Does anyone know of anything? Or any other old wives tale to do while pregnant.

admin answers:

I think that kids are born with different temperments, and there’s not much you can do to change that. It’s a good idea to be calm and peaceful when you’re pregnant, and it certainly won’t hurt, but you still might have a high-energy kid who doesn’t like to ever sit still!

Laura asks…

Any superstitions on the sex of the baby?

My little sister n law is having a baby. She won’t know until May on what she is having. I say she is carrying a girl because she is been having morning sickness alot and is starting to show already. She is due in September also.

admin answers:

I am having a girl and have had no morening sickness, but I did start to show pretty early, like around 12 weeks. My sister had no morning sickness either, but she carried everywhere and she had a baby boy.

I just had an “mothers intuition” that I was having a girl, and I was right.

Me and my husband want to have a baby but we cant. Any ideas or myths or superstitions to follow??

Here is the scoop. We want a baby BUT havent been able to have one. I have been to the doctors and everything is A okay and him well he is A okay too. We have tried several different things and my next attempt is to visit a woman who checks your uterus to see if its lowered and then she will massage your utures into place and tell you when to concive but at this point I am open for any more ideas, myths, superstitions. Help!

admin answers:

A few things that may help ……if either of you smoke stop, eat a healthy diet and take vitamins. Drink raspberry leaf tea. You may ovulate early or late in your cycle so disregard common ovulation estimates. Have lots of sex and RELAX! A watched pot never boils!

Daniel asks…

Superstitions on the sex of your unborn baby?

Does anyone know of any superstitions on how to determine the sex of your unborn child? I just found out that I was pregnant yesterday!!! ;o)
Not that im saying that its true, im just a little interested! Thanks !

admin answers:

Hold a crystal, needle or wedding ring on a piece of string over either your tummy or the palm of your hand let it move by itself and if it swings in circles, it is a girl, if it swings from side to side, it is a boy.
Another way is if you are carrying all round ( back and front ) it is a girl, but if you are all front, it is a boy.
But whatever it turns out to be, i’m sure you will love them,
best wishes and good luck to you both.

Sharon asks…

Superstition about newborn baby and bird following him?

I recently just had a baby boy and when we got to the house a small bird maybe a sparrow kept watching him through a window for hours. We later move him to a different room and the bird followed. Any superstition s or just weird?
Any myths or old wives tales?

admin answers:

Just stating my personal beliefs. I have heard and believe that we are born with guides and protectors who do take form of animals. They stay with us and watch over us in protection. This could be a past relative that has moved on, or some one close to you or your family. I wouldn’t worry, and would take it as a sign of love.
I too have a little one and when he was born a stray cat found us and always slept under the crib and followed him everywhere protecting him.

Helen asks…

Superstitions about Baby Shower?

I am the head person to plan social event for our department which is in a corporate banking enviroment. One of our co-workers is expecting in 7 weeks and I decided to give a small reception/baby shower for her. Everybody in the department donated money toward food and we purchased a nice gift card to Babies R Us. Some people brought other small gifts. We had light refreshments and no games.

I got in touch with her husband at the last minute and he told us that she would not like the surprise baby shower and would be unhappy about it, because they are superstitous.

However, she ate the food but not did attend the gathering in the conference room. And we will give her the giftcard after the baby is born.

What would have been your reaction?
I felt sort of embarrassed…..but I guess it was no way of knowing…She is not jewish. And I always thought that a baby shower was non religious.

admin answers:

Its kind of annoying since you put all that work into it, but you have to respect her feelings. In the future, you may not want to do surprise baby showers anymore – if anyone else is expecting, just ask them “we’d love to throw you a little shower, would that be allright with you?”

One of my good friends is Jewish, and she told me that being Jewish, they always do baby showers AFTER the baby is born. So its not unheard of.

Good luck!
