Plant a New Tree for a New Birth
|
![]() Plant a tree at birth of a newborn baby |
There is an old belief or superstition that planting a tree or other plant at the birth of a new child can foretell the baby’s chance of or against being a healthy child and whether the child will have a long life.
In this there seems to be a mental association between the tree growing and its health and that of the newborn child. These are really sentimental reasons and are still alive and well after thousands of years of circulation.
There is no scientific evidence to support the growth of a plant with the growth or life of a person – but of course that matters little. Those that believe in this superstition can often point to cases that prove their belief where someone had poor health or was short lived because the plant planted when they were born had the same or similar problems.
Now the normal situation (at least in most countries) is for a newborn child to do well and we all know that in most developed countries life spans have increased quite a bit since the beginning of the last and previous centuries and that generally means people are healthier to be able to live longer .
This superstition can be a dangerous proposition because of the fears it might instill in the minds of the parents that believe in it.
There are ample examples of seeming correlation between a tree and humans. This is especially true in the case of evergreen trees. The evergreen tree has symbolized long life since time immemorial. An evergreen was believed to be the favorite of the gods, especially spring gods that watched over us mere mortals. Because of its pleasant aroma the pine tree was especially revered.
The idea that the tree is related to human life on earth and is the progenitor of the human race is something handed down a very long time ago. In the Bible there is the “Tree of Life”, in the Eddas, in Iranian mythology, among the American Sioux Indians legends, as well as in other ancient and primitive beliefs. Its result is the classical idea that humankind are the fruit of the tree.
There are many mythology and folklore associations about trees and the connection with birth, In Hindu mythology, Vishnu was born in the shade of the banyan, Buddha was born and died under a sal-tree. Rhea gave birth to Zeus beneath a popular tree in Crete. Leta gave birth to Apollo and Artemis while clasping two trees on the island of Delos.
A popular term nowadays regarding a modern association with humans and trees is sometimes seen on the Internet and other places is the term “family tree.” So you see our fascination with trees and humans seems to be a never ending one.
