Eye Twitching & Questions– either Left Eyelid Twitching or Right Eyelid Twitches

|
An eyelid twitch is a general term for involuntary spasms of the eyelid muscles. The eyelid may close repeatedly, or nearly close, and re-open. Some people say eye jumping or eye twitching instead of eyelid twitching and it can occur in either eye. It also may be called Eyelid spasm or Blepharospasm.
Eyelid twitching is an annoying, uncontrollable muscle contraction. If the severity is not so bad it may be able to be cured naturally without any action. Otherwise some medical intervention may be necessary to solve the problem since it could interfere with our everyday life if the twitching is extreme or doesn’t stop. Some eye twitching may be caused due to lack of adequate sleep. Also strain of your eyes and body, unhealthiness, dry eyes, imbalanced electrolyte, stress and other conditions could help cause this eyelid twitching.
There are superstitions attached to eye twitching and the superstitions are in many countries. Some countries superstitions about the eyes are the opposite of those in other countries. Sometimes twitching in the left eye can mean good luck in these superstitions of even bad luck depending on which country the superstition originates from. Whether it’s a man whose left eye is twitching or a woman can also have different meanings.
Eyelid twitching usually disappears or stops by itself without treatment. However, the following steps may help:
- Get more sleep.
- Lubricate your eyes with eye drops.
- Drink less caffeine.
Call your primary care doctor or eye doctor (ophthalmologist, optometrist) if:
- Eyelid twitching does not go away within 1 week
- Twitching completely closes your eyelid
- Twitching involves other parts of your face
- You have redness, swelling, or a discharge from your eye
- Your upper eyelid is drooping

Michael asks…
Is there any myth regarding the flickering of eye lids?
Some people say that in boys flickering of left eyelid is a bad sign wheras flickering of right eyelid is considered that good is going to happen. Contrarily, its vice-versa for women. Is that true?

Suzi Q answers:
I have no idea but I know that from a medical standpoint it’s a lack of magnesium or from too much stress on the eye. So I think it doesn’t link to good/bad signs. The superstition stuff – well many believe, some do not. It depends a lot on the country you live in.

What does it mean when your left eye jumps?
My left eye is really annoying me right now. Lol. It keeps jumping. Some have told me it means there’s an upcoming death in the family, because it’s the left eye. Some have said stress. Some have said good things will happen, bad things will happen. I don’t know anymore. I’m confused. If you can, please help me. Thanks. It doesn’t happen frequently, thank goodness. But, when it does, annoying just isn’t the word!!!!

Suzi Q answers:
It is usually caused by stress or a lack of sleep. You can try putting a warm compress over it and very gently massaging the area.
If you consume excessive amounts of caffeine, then cutting back sometimes helps.
